Fennel Bitter
Fennel
(Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species in the genus Foeniculum
(treated as the sole species in the genus by most botanists).
It is a member of the family Apiaceae (formerly the Umbelliferae).
It is
a hardy, perennial, umbelliferous herb, with yellow flowers
and feathery leaves. It is generally considered indigenous
to the shores of the Mediterranean, but has become widely
naturalised elsewhere. It is a highly aromatic and flavorful
herb with culinary and medicinal uses, and is one of the primary
ingredients of absinthe. Florence fennel or finocchio is a
selection with a swollen, bulb-like stem base that is used
as a vegetable.
A herb
of ancient repute, believed to encourage longevity, courage
and strength. The Romans valued it for it's digestive properties
and the Greeks believed it to be a slimming herb.
Medicinal
uses: Fennel contains anethole, which can explain some
of its medical effects: it, or its polymers, act as phytoestrogens.
Intestinal
tract: On account of its carminative properties, Fennel
is chiefly used medicinally with purgatives to allay their
side effects and for this purpose forms one of the ingredients
of the well-known compound Liquorice Powder. Fennel water
has properties similar to those of anise and dill water: mixed
with sodium bicarbonate and syrup, these waters constitute
the domestic 'Gripe Water', used to ease flatulence in infants;
it also can be made into a syrup to treat babies with colic
or painful teething. Long term ingestion of fennel preparations
by babies is a known cause of thelarche. For adults, fennel
seeds or tea can relax the intestines and reduce bloating
caused by digestive disorders. Essential oil of fennel has
these properties in concentration. Fennel tea, formerly also
employed as a carminative, is made by pouring boiling water
on a teaspoonful of bruised fennel seeds.
Eyes:
In the Indian subcontinent, Fennel seeds are also eaten raw,
sometimes with some sweetener, to improve eyesight. Fennel
tea can be used as an eye tonic, applied directly like eyedrops
or as a compress, to reduce soreness and inflammation of the
eye.
Extracts
of fennel seed have been shown in animal studies to have a
potential use in the treatment of glaucoma.
Blood
and urine: Some people use fennel as a diuretic, and it
may be an effective diuretic and a potential drug for treatment
of hypertension.
Breastmilk:
There are historical anecdotes that fennel is a galactogogue,
improving the milk supply of a breastfeeding mother. This
use, although not supported by direct evidence, is sometimes
justified by the fact that fennel is a source of phytoestrogens,
which promote growth of breast tissue. However, normal lactation
does not involve growth of breast tissue. There is a single
case report of fennel tea ingested by a breastfeeding mother
resulting in neurotoxicity for the newborn child.
Other
uses: Syrup prepared from fennel juice was formerly given
for chronic coughs. Fennel is also largely used for cattle
condiments. It is one of the plants which is said to be disliked
by fleas, and powdered fennel has the effect of driving away
fleas from kennels and stables.
There
are two types of fennel, bitter fennel and sweet
fennel. Sweet fennel plants are the source of the anise-flavored
seeds found in the spice aisle. Bitter fennel is similar to
celery seed in culinary applications.
Characteristics
of fatty acids and essential oil from sweet fennel (Foeniculum
vulgare Mill. var. dulce) and bitter fennel fruits (F. vulgare
Mill. var. vulgare): Oil content in sweet and bitter fennels
was obtained 12.22% and 14.41%, respectively. The C18:1 c6,
C18:2, C18:1 c9 and C16:0 acids corresponding to 97% of total
oil was recorded as principal fatty acids. The ratios of essential
oil from sweet and bitter fennels were found similar (average
3.00%). trans-Anethole, estragole and fenchone were found
to be the main constituents in both fennels. The compound
with the highest value in the two oil samples was trans-anethole
as 95.25% (sweet) and 75.13% (bitter). While estragole was
found in bitter fennel oil in a remarkable amount (15.51%),
sweet fennel oil contained small amounts of estragole (2.87%).
Fenchone was found <1% in sweet and 5% in bitter fennel. p-Anisaldehyde
in bitter fennel essential oil, and agr-pinene and γ-terpinene
in sweet fennel essential oil were not recorded, and these
compounds were found very low or <1%.
